Havana
Although not an ideal choice for a stay-put holiday, everyone who stays at a Cuban beach resort should visit the country's historic capital, even if only for a day. All resorts offer trips with or without an overnight stay - the more distant ones by air.

Varadero - Kids Club  All Inclusive
Favoured by the majority of visitors to Cuba probably because of its reputation as a "safe option". Plenty of sun, sea, sand and water sports; the closest major resort to Havana. Lots of Italians, Spanish and Canadians.

Dominican Republic

Bavaro - All Inclusive
Middle- to upmarket holidaymakers who do not mind being "confined to barracks".

Cofresi - All Inclusive
Those who prefer quiet locations to bustling resorts and are prepared to accept the limited amenities on offer.

Playa Dorada -Kids Club  All Inclusive 
Predominantly well-funded, beach-loving couples of all ages; particularly popular with honeymooners. Many others come just for the golf.

Puerto Plata -All Inclusive
A working town popular as a local-excursion destination for those seeking local history, shopping and the opportunity to ride up to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres.

Samana - All Inclusive
Mainly budget to middlemarket independent travellers and boaters, but increasing numbers of package tourists.

Sosua - All Inclusive
Most ages and middlemarket types who want a more authentic Dominican atmosphere, leaning towards informality. Particularly popular with Canadians and Europeans.

Mexico

Cancun - Kids Club  All Inclusive
Sun, sea and sand enthusiasts looking for plenty of packaged activities, especially water sports. Popular with couples and families, but just about everyone wanting a beach package should be able to find something to their liking.

Playa del Carmen - Kids Club  All Inclusive 
From backpackers to luxury seekers, although the former are increasingly being priced out of the market. Playacar is mainly for package tourists, with Americans well represented.

Puerto Vallarta - Kids Club  All Inclusive
Something for just about everyone – young and old, package tourists and independent travellers, sun-worshippers, soft-adventure groups and eco-tourists. Regular influxes of day-tripping cruise passengers, as Puerto Vallarta is a popular port of call.

Riviera Maya South - Kids Club  All Inclusive
The large hotels dotted along the coast are firmly mass-market and cater for all visitors, American and Canadian couples predominate with Europeans coming in a close third.
